Dropping the Romance

Can you believe they’re gone?

Streetcar--Highland Park

I can.

I mean, come on, they were slow and tired! My cousin put this photo on her Facebook page. These suckers ran all over Los Angeles back in the day. This photo is from the 1950’s. I mean, it’s no wonder they pulled them out.

But—friends in the West. You need something. Start digging.

Portland, Oregon has re-introduced streetcars, they are not charming & old fashioned, but rather sleek & modern, but they give the same purpose & are well used. My father grew up in Silver Lake & has told me about the streetcars that ran all over LA & to the beach at Saanta Monica.

I hear it! But Portland is small compared to LA. I bet a streetcar from Silverlake to Santa Monica took 80 minutes!
Anyway---I think the answer is subways. The subways that exist in LA work well.

I found the motor parked on the right with the whitewalls, to be just as interesting as the tram. Love fifties American cars.
